A Week of Dogs, Cats, Birds and Politicians
For three days, I worked at STRIDE which helps people with depression get back into the work force. Someone questioned why I was there? I seem so "normal". Well it's hard to work steadily when anxiety attacks take over your like a demon. Sometimes I get so scared of things that haven't happened yet, or will not happen and I can hardly breathe.
Well on those days, I also volunteered at Dog Guides. A wonderful organization that helps place specially trained dogs with people who have disabilities. It's such a great place, so positive. The people are nice and the dogs are gorgeous. The downside, I can't pet them because they are working. It's so hard. I love dogs, cats and other animals, and I have to pet them. But I can't with these dogs although they did let me cuddle a wiggly lab puppy. Puppies have a way of wiggling themselves into your heart. But the longing I have gets taken care of when I go and walk dogs at the Oakville Humane Society. I feel bad because I haven't been there lately, so I am going to get back into it. My favourite dog is a Jack Russel named Daisy. This dog is such a hoot. She just loves to shake footballs around and the balls are almost as big as her. She has so much energy to spare. I hope she gets into a house with very energetic people.
As for me, I have my two girls. Squeakers and Stella, Squeakers is a calico cat who just loves cuddles. Stella is a brown tabby who loves to rub your foot whenever you sit down.
I have two black-hooded finches, a male and a female who have a better love life then me!
On Thursday, my good friend Bronwen and I went down to Queen's Park to attend a conferance on Democratic Renewal in Ontario. We are part of a group called Fair Vote Canada. Our aim is to reform the election system provincially and federally. We were one of 150 who managed to get in and it was quite interesting. I met the object of my complaints on my blog, Attorney General Michael Bryant, however, I did behave, Brownen threatened to drag me out if I didn't as well as leaving me stranded in Toronto. You know for someone who is not sharp on dog breeds, he's a very nice person. I guess you can like someone without agreeing with them. I'm also glad that he is supportive of the idea making our electoral system more fairer. The current system creates dictatorships as well have seen with Mulroney, Mike Harris, Ralph Klein and in some cases Chrietien. I liked Chreitien..he was a character. "Bush is not a moron, he is my friend."
I also saw Premier McGuinty. He made a great speech about how our current first-past-the-post system is very "paternalistic" couldn't agree more. After years of watching Mike Harris and his Harrisites dictate this province, it is nice to have a government that calls us "citizens" instead of "taxpayers". And doesn't have the "Storm Troopers" out bashing anyone who disagrees with them. That's the neo-con way. I just hope the new systems is in place before the Liberals time is up in 2007, so we don't get the neocons back in. Although thankfully the new Conservative leader, John Tory, is a much more moderate Conservative and more diplomatic. And does support changing the electoral system as well.
So that's my week of dogs, cats, birds and politician. Quite a week I must say.
And thanks to Bronwen..I didn't pull a Carolyn Parrish that might have got me kicked out of Queen's Park..
